Are you “Hi5”ing your way through life?

The rapid pace of day-to-day life usually causes people to neglect their health. Unfortunately though, the reality is if you don’t have your health you have nothing. Inevitably once you fall into a cycle of unhealthy habits your body will force you to learn just how important a healthy lifestyle really is. So what are the five most important practices that help you lead a healthy lifestyle? I believe nutrition, exercise, sleep, hydration and balance through mindfulness form the perfect equation for living a healthy lifestyle.

1. Nutrition
These days, there is so much fear mongering in relation to food and healthy eating. But I truly believe there is no food that is right or wrong. Food is just food. It actually all comes down to moderation and portion sizes. So strive to eat a variety of foods from each food group so that you feed your body with all the nutrients it requires.

2. Exercise
Everyone knows exercise is an integral part for having optimal health because of its many benefits, but most importantly, because it reduces the risk of health problems. The best way to include it in your daily activities can be by simply taking the stairs instead of the elevator, getting off the train or bus one stop earlier and walking the rest of the way or playing with your children.

Remember – To move for at least 30 minutes everyday

3. Sleep
With the hustle and bustle of life, most people forget to make sleep a priority. However, adequate sleep not only makes you feel better while banishing under-eye circles it also benefits your weight, mind, heart and much more.

Remember – To get around 7 – 9 hours of sleep every night

4. Hydration
Did you know the average adult body is compromised of approximately 60% water? Well, it is, and this is why staying hydrated is so important to staying healthy. It is even more crucial for us in Dubai because we have to deal with extremely high temperatures almost all year round.

Remember – To drink a minimum of 2 litres of water everyday

5. Balance through mindfulness
In our everyday life, we are usually so busy or in a hurry to do things that we forget to live in the present moment. That is where mindfulness can help us to slow down and to pay close attention to what is happening in the moment. It means noticing what is happening inside our mind and body.

Leading a healthy lifestyle is a complex task, as there are many factors contributing to overall health. But try to prioritize one of our hi5 lifestyle practices this week and then continually keep adding one more as you see fit. Small changes add up to great health benefits in the long run. So take care of yourself now in order to prepare for a healthier future!
